BrianGroves

Jr. Engineer
Hello there! My name is Brian, and I am an engineer in search of a job. My education and passion is in Aerospace Engineering, but I'm experienced in Mechanical Engineering as well. I'm looking for a fast-paced, challenging and creative job!Check out the Portfolio tab for examples of my work, and the Resume tab which outlines my education, skills and experience in more detail. Thanks for visiting!
Vehicle Design. Component Analysis. Aerodynamic Performance.
SonicSwift
Senior Capstone Project
Supersonic Business Jet
SonicSwift
Cruises at Mach 2.2, carrying 12 passengers 5000nm.
SonicSwift
Low sonic boom, high fuel efficiency.
Vapor Bursting Research
Vapor Condension Visualization to investigate vortex formation, coalesce and bursting.
Vapor Bursting Research
Laser slicing of the flow.
Vapor Bursting Research
Vortex Coalescing patterns on compound delta wings at high angles of attack.
Education
M.S. in Aerodynamics
NC State University- GPA: 3.78
- TA for Student Machine Shop.
B.S. in Aerospace Engineering
Virginia Tech- GPA: 3.74
- Graduated Magna Cum Laude, in Honors.
- Minors in Math and Economics.
Relevant Coursework
- Advanced Courses: Compressible Flow, Incompressible Flow, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Aircraft Design, Thermodynamics.
- Intermediate Courses: Applied Aerodynamics, Boundary Layer Theory, Aerospace Propulsion Systems, Thin Walled Structures.
Experience
Project Manager Intern
Pineville, NC- Assisted PM's design custom steam trace piping solutions in oil refineries.
- Promoted to project manager for two refinery expansion projects totaling $120k.
- Developed scheduling tools and material accountability techniques in MS Excel for several multi-million dollar projects.
- Interfaced directly with domestic and international clients, on routine and urgent communications.
Senior Capstone Project Team Leader
Virginia Tech- Led a 10 person team of my peers in designing a conceptual supersonic business jet; converged on a
design that travels at Mach 2.2, using only twice as much fuel per passenger-mile as the leading
commercial transport, with significantly mitigated sonic boom impacts.
- Utilized MATLAB to develop and integrate component optimization routines, enabling our team to analyze vehicle parameter dependence relations.
- Personally investigated vehicle aerodynamics and sonic boom mitigation techniques.
Vortex Bursting Research
Virginia Tech- Designed a vapor jet ejector and carried out experiments in low speed vortex visualization forming on delta wing aircraft at take off conditions.
Study Abroad in Hamburg, Germany
Hamburg, Germany- Led a group of 6 VT students to take a comprehensive aircraft design course, in partnership with EADS – Airbus.
- Authored a book about my travels backpacking through Europe after the course.
Engineer in Training
Private Pilot
Eagle Scout
Skills
"It was like asking you to pick up a pile of leaves, and giving you a leaf poker. You built a rake - that's the kind of employee we need around here!"Quote from Executive VP during final internship presentation.
